Left:
1914, "Mystery & Melancholy of a Street."By Giorgio de Chirico. Right: 2010, "Refuge in Solitude." By me. The left image was completed by surrealist, Giorgio de Chirico and I used his painting as inspiration for my painting on the right. I was attracted to the color tone and mood of Chirico's painting. There's mystery to his piece and I wanted to convey that in mine as well. The perspective was also interesting and it also adds to the mystery. I painted temples as representation of the buildings; drawing a connection to my Khmer heritage and the mystery that comes with being disconnected to it since I did not grow up in Cambodia. However, my heritage is still a part of who I am and as I continue to grow, the mystery behind the disconnect starts to reveal itself. I hoped somehow this was conveyed in my piece.
